Bad Sulza in Thuringia - "Tuscany of the East"

Composer Karl Muellerhartung was inspired by the beauty of the landscape around Bad Sulza and wrote this wonderful song about Thuringia. Composing should not be particularly difficult in Bad Sulza. The picturesque city is embedded in the valley of the river Ilm. Surrounded by the outreaches of the Finne-Hills and the Ilm-Saale area. Due to it’s location, Bad Sulza is well protected and blesses with a mild climate.

145 meters between the level of the river Ilm and surrounding hills make for attractive views and stunning landscapes.

The bright background of the limestone and the landscape also influence the climate and allow the area to be one of the northernmost wine growing areas in Europe, a tradition going back a thousand years.

The hills not only allow for moderate temperatures but also provide fertile grounds for wine to grow.

The “Wine-Hiking-Trail” provides you with the opportunity to see wineries up close and to explore the area on foot. It’s 85 kilometers of marked trails guide you along many of the interesting destinations of the area.

The medical practitioner Gregor Gerhard discovered in 1730 that the saline spring that surfaces in Bad Sulza has healing properties. Especially people with skin problems experience considerable improvements of their conditions in combination with artificial UV light. A similar combination as experienced at the Red Sea.
